Thorogood English offers structured courses designed to take students systematically through everything they need to know for their exams. Unlike drop-in classes, courses have a clear beginning, middle, and end — and are built around a curriculum that covers every component of the relevant exam specification.

Planned Courses for 2027
The following courses are planned for the January 2027 cohort. Each course runs over a fixed term, with weekly Zoom sessions in a small group of no more than 6 students.
IGCSE English Language — Full Course
A comprehensive course covering both papers of the IGCSE English Language exam. Topics include: reading comprehension techniques, summary writing, directed writing, transactional writing, and narrative/descriptive writing. Suitable for students in Years 10–11 preparing for Cambridge CIE or Edexcel exams.
Format: Weekly 60-minute sessions · Small group (max 6) · Online via Zoom
IGCSE English Literature — Full Course
Structured study of the set texts for Cambridge IGCSE English Literature. The course builds analytical essay-writing skills alongside close study of prose, poetry, and drama. Students will practise timed responses, exam technique, and develop confident, well-argued written analysis.
Format: Weekly 60-minute sessions · Small group (max 6) · Online via Zoom
A-Level English Language — Full Course
A full A-Level English Language course covering all components: language investigation, creative writing, unseen analysis, and the study of language change and variation. Students will build both the analytical skills and the linguistic knowledge needed to excel at A-Level.
Format: Weekly 90-minute sessions · Small group (max 6) · Online via Zoom
11+ English Preparation Course
A structured preparation course for students in Years 4–6 sitting GL Assessment or CEM 11+ exams. The course builds comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, and creative writing skills progressively, culminating in timed practice under exam conditions.

Every course is built around the actual exam — not generic “English improvement”. Here’s what each programme covers.
IGCSE English Language
- Paper 1 and Paper 2 structure and question types
- Reading comprehension: retrieval, inference, language analysis, and summary techniques

11+ English Preparation
