About Jacqueline Mary Thorogood
Hello — I’m Jacqueline Thorogood, and I’ve spent well over a decade doing the work I love most: helping young people find their voice in English. I’m a qualified English teacher with extensive experience preparing students for IGCSE, A-Level, and 11+ examinations. Before moving into private tutoring, I worked as an examiner — which means I know exactly what the mark schemes are looking for, and exactly how to help students earn those marks. My approach is different from the large tutoring agencies. I keep my groups deliberately small — never more than six students — because I believe every child deserves to feel seen in the classroom, not just present in it. Online learning via Zoom means my students can join from anywhere in the world, and many of my families are expats who simply want access to rigorous, British-standard English teaching wherever life has taken them. Whether your child is preparing for their IGCSE Language paper, working through A-Level coursework, or building the analytical skills they’ll need for the 11+ — I’ll meet them where they are and take them further than they thought possible. I’m currently based in Malaysia and opening my first cohort of online students from January 2027. If you’d like your child to be part of it, I’d love to hear from you.

Why Small Groups?
Six students isn’t an arbitrary number. It’s the size at which every student in the room can contribute to a discussion, have their written work read and returned with proper feedback, and receive genuine individual attention — not just a seat in a virtual classroom.
Large classes produce average outcomes. Small groups produce exceptional ones. That is why every Thorogood English group is capped at six, and why that cap will never change.
My Approach to Teaching
I cap every group at six students. I mark every piece of written work individually. I teach technique in the service of understanding, not as a substitute for it. And I try to make my classroom the kind of place where it’s completely safe to not know something yet — because that’s the only condition under which learning actually happens.
If you’d like to understand more about why I teach the way I do, I’ve written about it in detail on my Teaching Philosophy page.
