Description

Helps with: picking out the key ideas in a text and summarising them clearly in your own words.

The complete Summary unit for Cambridge IGCSE First Language English (0500), Paper 1 Question 2, written for the 2027–2029 specification. It covers both parts: the 2(a) summary and the 2(b) writer’s attitude.

Summary questions look easy and are surprisingly hard to score well on. This unit gives students one clear method they can use every time: find the right points, say them briefly in their own words, and join them into one fluent paragraph under 120 words.

What’s included?

  • Editable PowerPoint with five complete 60-minute lessons: 170 teaching slides, with the texts on screen for reading aloud and a glossary for every text.
  • Detailed speaker notes on every slide: the purpose of each task, timings, what to say, follow-up questions, the answers to expect, what to watch for, and an “On Zoom” tip for online lessons.
  • Student workbook (57 pages, Word and PDF) with a space for every slide task in slide order, a Mark It Yourself student mark scheme and a key words page at the back.
  • An original teaching text written for the unit, “Famous at Fifteen”, about the hidden cost of becoming a teenage influencer (about 580 words). It is pitched at coursebook level with challenging vocabulary and a full glossary, while the questions stay clear and simple.
  • A full exam-style Question 2 practice paper on a second original text, “Beyond the Brochure” (should teenagers volunteer abroad?), with both 2(a) and 2(b), timings and answer pages, plus its own mark scheme (Word and PDF): all 13 points with what to accept, the distractors, the writer’s attitudes for 2(b), and graded model answers at three levels.
  • Teacher Mark Scheme (Word and PDF): the 12-point 2(a) mark scheme with what to accept and what isn’t enough, the distractors that earn no credit, the writer’s attitudes for 2(b), plain-English levels, graded model answers with commentary, answers to every workbook task, and the common mistakes to watch for.
  • Two methods students take into the exam: Find it · Shrink it · Link it for 2(a) and Name it · Nail it · Explain it for 2(b).
  • Model answers throughout, from a weak first draft to a 114-word top-band summary that fits all twelve points, plus top-level 2(b) answers.
  • Every task clearly marked Core, with an Optional Support hint for students who need a way in and an Optional A* Challenge for those aiming for the top grades.
  • Lessons that never feel the same twice: an app feed, a detective’s case file, an airport departure lounge, an examiner’s desk and an attitude line.
  • Self-rating at the start and end of every lesson, plus an exit task, so students can see how far they have come.
  • Editable files: PowerPoint (.pptx) and Word (.docx) for the slides, workbook, mark scheme and practice paper, so you can adapt anything.

What are the lessons?

  1. Find It: what Question 2 asks and how it is marked, spotting the focus word, and finding the stated points while cutting the five kinds of distractor
  2. The Hidden Points: a detective case file on implicit meaning, turning clues in the text into points the examiner will credit, and knowing when an inference goes too far
  3. Shrink It: four ways to put a point in your own words, and timed rounds with a shrinking word allowance so each point fits in about ten words
  4. Link It: marking a summary like an examiner, grouping the twelve points into themes, joining them fluently, then a timed 15-minute 2(a) marked one strand at a time
  5. The Writer’s Attitude: Question 2(b) with an attitude line from admiring to critical, exact tone words and short quotations, then the full Question 2 practice paper against the clock

Written for students aged 14–16 and pitched to support weaker readers while stretching students aiming for an A*. It works in the classroom, for one-to-one tutoring, or for independent study at home.
