Home education is a growing choice for families around the world — and IGCSE English is one of the most popular qualifications home-educated students pursue. It’s fully achievable, but it requires deliberate planning. Here’s what you need to know.
Can Home-Educated Students Sit IGCSE English?
Yes. IGCSE is particularly well-suited to home educators because it’s internationally recognised, available through independent exam centres, and assessed almost entirely by examination (no school-based assessment or teacher-assessed components). Home-educated students can sit Cambridge IGCSE exams as private candidates at registered exam centres.
Finding an Exam Centre
Private candidates cannot sit IGCSE exams at any school — they need to find a Cambridge-approved exam centre that accepts private candidates. In the UK, a network of independent exam centres specifically serves home educators and private candidates; internationally, many British Council offices serve this function, as do some international schools. Search for “Cambridge IGCSE private candidates” plus your country or city to find options in your area.
Register early — exam centre places fill up, and registration deadlines are months before the exam sessions (typically May/June and October/November).
Which Specification?
Cambridge IGCSE English Language is available as 0500 (UK and international) and 0990 (Cambridge International). The content is similar; the main difference is in the marking and grade boundaries. Check which specification your exam centre accepts and prepare accordingly.
How to Prepare
The Cambridge website provides the syllabus, specimen papers, and mark schemes for every IGCSE qualification — these are the essential documents for self-directed preparation. Use the syllabus to understand what’s assessed; use past papers to practise under timed conditions; use mark schemes to self-assess.
For many home-educated students, supplementing self-study with specialist online tutoring is the most efficient route to exam success. Literature Too?
Home educators can sit IGCSE English Literature as well, though they need to ensure they’re studying the correct set texts for the session they’re taking (Cambridge announces set texts in advance).
